The secret spots, lesser-known experiences and local favourites that most visitors to Montepulciano never find

Most visitors to Montepulciano walk the main corso, visit Piazza Grande and duck into the most prominent cantina on Via Voltaia. They miss about 80% of what makes the town worth visiting. Here are the hidden gems.

The Secret Viewpoints

The western walls at sunset — walk along the town walls on the western side in the final hour before sunset. The views over the Val d'Orcia, with Pienza visible on its ridge 14km away, are among the most extraordinary in Tuscany. Almost no tourists come here.

The gardens below Piazza Grande — through a small door on the south side of the square (follow the signs for the Palazzo Contucci), there are private gardens with a view of the surrounding countryside that most visitors never see.

The tower of San Donato — one of the lesser-visited churches in town, with an intact medieval tower that offers views similar to the Palazzo Comunale but with far fewer visitors.

The Local Producers

The Saturday market — every Saturday morning, local farmers and producers set up stalls outside the town walls. Pecorino directly from the maker, wild herbs, honey, seasonal vegetables — this is where the restaurants shop, and where you'll pay a fraction of the tourist boutique prices.

The historic cellars under the town — Montepulciano is built on a network of cantine — ancient cellars carved into the tufa. Several can be visited, including the Cantina della Fortezza under the old fortress walls. Most tourists walk past the entrance.

The Experiences Most Visitors Miss

A private guided walk at dawn — the town before 8am is a completely different place. The light is extraordinary, the streets are empty, and the views are unobstructed. Some local guides offer sunrise walks that start before the town wakes up.

The Eramo Secret Garden — this is, appropriately, a secret: a private walled garden with panoramic views that has been opened to a maximum of 18 guests at a time for exclusive wine and food experiences. It doesn't appear on the main tourist maps. Our Sunset Wine Tasting is the best way to discover it.

Monticchiello — 15km from Montepulciano, this tiny medieval village is known across Italy for its extraordinary community theatre (Teatro Povero) — where the entire village writes and performs a play each summer that comments on contemporary social issues. Completely overlooked by most tourists.

The Food Off the Main Corso

The restaurants on and near Via Voltaia are good — but pricey and often crowded. Walk away from the main drag:

The local alimentari — the small grocery shops on the side streets sell artisan products at normal prices: pecorino di Pienza, local salumi, olive oil, wine.

The bread bakery near Sant'Agostino — fresh pane sciocco (the classic salt-free Tuscan bread) baked every morning. The best bruschetta in town starts here.

The hidden Montepulciano is more beautiful, more affordable and more memorable than the tourist version. It just requires a willingness to walk one street further and look one door deeper.
