Honest advice on every season in Tuscany — weather, crowds, prices, events and what makes each time of year unique in the Val d'Orcia and Montepulciano

Tuscany is beautiful in every season — but not equally suited to every kind of trip in every month. The honest answer to "when should I visit?" depends on what you're looking for. Here is the full picture.

Spring — March to June

March: the earliest spring. The almond trees bloom first, then the wildflowers. The countryside is still quiet, accommodation prices are at their annual low and the light (though softer than summer) has a quality unique to early spring. Downsides: some cantina and restaurants are still closed; the evenings can be cold.

April: our favourite month. The vineyards show their first green shoots (Prugnolo Gentile is among the last to bud — a frost protection mechanism). Poppy fields appear on the hillsides. The tourists of August are still months away. Temperatures: 14–22°C. Perfect for walking, cycling and outdoor tastings. Eramo's experiences begin for the season in April.

May: the Sagra del Vino Nobile (last week of May) brings producers and wine lovers to Montepulciano for the annual wine festival. Temperatures: 18–26°C. The most popular spring month — book accommodation well in advance.

June: warm, beautiful, the beginning of the busy season. First major crowds arrive in the final two weeks. Still excellent but book everything in advance.

Summer — July and August

July: hot (30–35°C in the valley), crowded and expensive. The wine experiences and restaurants still function well, but the atmosphere of the town is dominated by tourism. The light, at least, is extraordinary — the long summer evenings turn everything golden.

August: peak crowds and peak prices. The Bravio delle Botti (barrel race, last Sunday of August) is one of the most extraordinary local events in Tuscany — a medieval barrel-rolling competition between the town's eight neighbourhoods. If you come in August specifically for this, it's worth every inconvenience. Otherwise, consider another month.

Autumn — September to November

September: harvest month. The vineyards turn from green to gold. The air smells of fermentation from the cantina. Temperatures return to perfect levels (18–26°C). Crowds begin to thin rapidly after the first week. One of the two best months to visit.

October: perhaps the most beautiful month of the year. Full autumn colour. Truffle season begins (the Fiera del Tartufo Bianco di San Miniato, 50km from Montepulciano, is in November). Temperatures: 12–20°C. Crowds: low. Prices: 20–30% below summer peak.

November: quiet, cool, occasionally misty in the mornings — which creates landscapes of extraordinary beauty. The white truffles of the Crete Senesi are at their peak. The town feels genuinely local, not touristic.

Winter — December to February

December: the Christmas market in Piazza Grande is small but charming. Temperatures: 5–12°C. The wine experiences and most cantina continue to operate.

January–February: the quietest, coldest months. Some establishments close for a few weeks. But for those who want genuine solitude and remarkable winter landscapes, this is the time.
