An honest guide to accommodation in and around Montepulciano — from agriturismi in the vineyards to apartments in the historic centre
Where you stay in Montepulciano changes the entire character of your visit. The options range from apartments in the medieval centro storico to farmhouses surrounded by Prugnolo Gentile vines — and the experience of waking up in each is genuinely different.
What it offers: the ability to walk everywhere after dinner, the atmosphere of a medieval town after the day-trippers have left, a genuinely urban Tuscan experience.
What to look for: an apartment rather than a hotel — several Montepulciano residents rent beautifully converted medieval rooms and flats. Via di Gracciano, Via di Voltaia and the streets around Piazza Grande have the most characterful options.
What to be aware of: the centro storico is entirely pedestrian. You'll park outside the walls and carry luggage uphill. The streets are also narrow and occasionally noisy in high season.
Best for: couples, solo travelers, those who want to experience the town as a resident rather than a tourist.
What it offers: the classic Tuscan countryside experience — vineyards outside the window, olive trees, a pool, home-produced wine and oil, quiet at night.
What to look for: a genuine working farm rather than a resort that happens to be called an agriturismo. Look for places with their own vineyard and production, family management and agricultural activity (not just "agriturismo style" decor).
What to be aware of: you'll need a car for everything. Distances to town and restaurants are 5–15km.
Best for: families, groups, those who want the complete rural Tuscan experience.
The area between Montepulciano and Pienza (the Via Lauretana direction) has some of the finest agriturismo options — with views of both towns and the Val d'Orcia between them.
What it offers: complete privacy, your own pool, space for larger groups, the feeling of living in Tuscany rather than visiting.
What to look for: established rental agencies (Tuscany Now, Italian Villa Holidays, Parker Villas) with long track records. Read reviews carefully — villas vary enormously in quality.
Price range: €300–1500+ per night depending on size, pool and location.
Best for: groups of 6+, families, week-long stays, those celebrating special occasions.
Chianciano Terme (10km) has dozens of spa hotels — typically 3–4 star, with direct access to the thermal pools. Good value and an excellent base for a health and wellness trip combined with Montepulciano visits.
Stay in an agriturismo in the Vino Nobile production zone — ideally with a pool and your own wine from the estate. Book our Sunset Wine Tasting for your first evening. This combination — arrival, settling in, a glass of the local wine with the sunset — is the ideal introduction to Montepulciano.
For villas and private groups, our Private Terrace Dinner and Chef's Secret Table are the natural evening complement to a luxury villa stay.
Private sunset wine tasting, AIS-certified sommelier, exclusive hilltop garden in Montepulciano. Maximum 18 guests.
