The honest, practical guide to every season in Montepulciano — crowds, weather, events, prices and what you'll miss if you come at the wrong time

Every season in Montepulciano is beautiful — and every season involves trade-offs. Here is the honest guide to what each month offers, without the promotional gloss.

Spring — April to June (Recommended)

April: The best month. The vineyards are awakening (the first green shoots of Prugnolo Gentile emerge in April), the hills around town are covered in poppies and irises, the light is soft and golden, and the tourists of August are still months away. Temperatures: 14–22°C. Crowds: low to moderate. Prices: 20–30% below summer peak.

May: The Sagra del Vino Nobile (Wine Festival) takes place in the last week of May — one of the few genuinely local events, with producers opening their cantina for tastings. Temperatures: 18–25°C. Crowds: moderate. Ideal for hikers and cyclists.

June: Warm, sunny, flowers everywhere. The first wave of summer tourists begins to arrive in late June. Temperatures: 22–30°C. Crowds: moderate, rising. Still excellent — but book accommodation and experiences in advance.

Summer — July to August (Avoid if Possible)

July: Hot (30–38°C), crowded, expensive. The famous destinations (Piazza Grande, the main cantina, the best restaurants) are at maximum capacity. The experience is still good but significantly diminished.

August: Peak tourist season. The Bravio delle Botti (the barrel race, last Sunday of August) is an extraordinary local event — but the town is packed for the entire month. If you come in August, book everything months in advance.

Autumn — September to November (Highly Recommended)

September: Harvest season begins. The vineyards turn from green to gold. The smells of fermentation come from the cantina. Temperatures drop to a perfect 18–26°C. Crowds begin to thin. One of the best months.

October: The finest month of autumn. The vineyards are at full autumn colour. Truffle season begins (the Fiera del Tartufo di San Miniato, 50km away, is in November). Temperatures: 12–20°C. Crowds: low. Prices: significantly below summer.

November: Quiet, cool, occasionally foggy in the mornings (in a beautiful way). The truffle season is at its peak. The town feels genuinely lived-in rather than touristic. Temperatures: 8–15°C. Crowds: very low.

Winter — December to March

December: The Christmas market in Piazza Grande is charming and manageable. Temperatures: 5–12°C. Crowds: very low except for the Christmas week.

January–February: The quietest months. Some restaurants and cantina close for part of the period. Cold and often rainy, but the town has a contemplative beauty in winter light.

March: Spring begins. The first wildflowers appear. Temperatures start to rise (8–16°C). The town begins to reopen. A good month for those who prefer genuine solitude.

Our Recommendation

First visit: April–May or September–October. Perfect weather, manageable crowds, all experiences available.

Return visit: November or early December — for the truffle season, the autumn colours and the sense of having the town almost to yourself.

Our experiences at Eramo run from April to November. Availability is limited in peak months — we recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance from June through September.
