The practical guide to reaching Montepulciano by car, train, bus and private transfer — with journey times, costs and honest recommendations

Montepulciano is perched on a hilltop in the Valdichiana, not on a main railway line and not immediately obvious on a map. Getting there requires a little planning — but the logistics are not complicated once you understand the options.

By Car (Recommended)

The car is by far the best way to reach and explore Montepulciano and the surrounding Val d'Orcia. The A1 motorway (Florence–Rome) passes through the valley below, making access straightforward.

From Florence: A1 south towards Rome, exit at Valdichiana (Monte San Savino). Follow signs for Bettolle and then Montepulciano. Total: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

From Rome: A1 north towards Florence, exit at Chiusi–Chianciano Terme. Follow signs for Montepulciano. Total: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

From Siena: SP 146 via Pienza, or SP 438 via Torrita di Siena. The Pienza route is spectacular — the road passes through the heart of the Val d'Orcia. Total: approximately 1 hour.

From Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci): Car rental at the airport, then as per Florence route above. Total: 1 hour 45 minutes.

From Rome Fiumicino Airport: Car rental at the airport, then as per Rome route above. Total: 3 hours.

Parking: Montepulciano is partially pedestrian. Park outside the town walls at the Prato (lower entrance, free) or in the Sn Donato car park (paid, near the upper entrance). Both have escalators or lifts into the historic centre.

By Train

There is no direct train to Montepulciano. The nearest stations are:

Chiusi–Chianciano Terme (20km, 25 minutes by car): Served by Trenitalia (Florence–Rome intercity line). Multiple trains daily from Florence (1h15), Rome (1h30), Siena (connection required).

LPT Bus Connection: A local bus runs between Chiusi station and Montepulciano. Check current schedules at tiemmespa.it — frequency is limited, approximately 4–6 departures daily.

By Private Transfer

Several private transfer companies offer direct service from Florence, Rome, Siena and the airports. This is the most comfortable option for groups or those arriving late at night. Expect to pay €80–120 from Florence, €150–200 from Rome.

Recommended search: "private transfer Montepulciano" — several reliable operators appear.

From Other Tuscan Towns

Pienza: 14km, 20 minutes by car (spectacular road through the Val d'Orcia).

Montalcino: 40km, 45 minutes by car.

Cortona: 30km, 35 minutes by car.

Arezzo: 60km, 1 hour by car.

Once You're There

Once in Montepulciano, a car is essential for exploring the surrounding area (Pienza, Montalcino, the Val d'Orcia scenic drives). The town itself is pedestrian — park outside the walls and walk.
